Congratulations to Mr. Tran Van Than on Successfully Defending His PhD Thesis

We are delighted to announce that Mr. Tran Van Than successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis on 15.12.2025. His thesis, entitled "On-Demand Inverse Design of Phononic Metamaterials via Deep Learning" is the result of years of hard work and dedication. The defense took place in Building 1104, Room B214,  Welfengarten 1A, and was also available via online meeting.

Mr. Tran's research in the field of addressesing the inverse design of phononic metamaterials, a class of engineered materials capable of controlling elastic and acoustic wave propagation by forming frequency bandgaps. The inverse design problem aims to generate unit cell geometries that exhibit user-specified bandgap characteristics. However, it is fundamentally challenging due to the nonlinear, high-dimensional, and non-unique mapping between structure and physical response. Conventional optimization-based approaches often suffer from high computational cost, limited scalability, and insufficient solution diversity. To overcome these limitations, this work investigates data-driven inverse design strategies based on deep learning.

We extend our warmest congratulations to Mr. Tran Van Than on this outstanding achievement.
